Wiktionary traces welcome to Old English wilcuma, built from the elements for will or pleasure and for a comer — a person whose arrival you are pleased about. Welcoming is that word plus -ing, so arrival has been inside it from the start.
維基詞典把 welcome 追到古英語 wilcuma，由「心之所願」加上「來的人」組成，字面接近「你來我很高興的那個人」。welcoming 就是這個字加上 -ing。所以「有人到了」這件事，從一開始就在字裡面，今天三個用法也都圍著抵達的那一刻打轉。
