Picture several people all reaching for the same prize at the same time, each wanting to grab it first or grab more than the rest. 'Competitive' is that stretched-toward-one-prize feeling — more than one side pulling for the same thing.

From the word’s history

From Latin competere: com- 'together' + petere 'to strive, seek.' At root it is people striving toward the same thing side by side. 'Competitive' keeps that picture — more than one side reaching for one prize.
