核心畫面

One way to picture deserving: a pair of scales. On one side sits what a person has done, or the situation they are in. On the other sits something somebody might give them — money, help, a prize, praise, and now and then a punishment. When the two sides match, English calls that person deserving: the thing landing on them makes sense. One detail is worth holding on to. The person on the scales almost never uses this word about themselves; somebody else is doing the weighing.

From the word’s history

The packet gives no etymology for deserving beyond its link to the verb deserve, so no root story is claimed here.

資料只記到 deserving 是動詞 deserve 的 -ing 形式,沒有更早的來源,所以這裡不往下推。上面的天平是幫助理解的畫面,不是歷史說明。

Wiktionary form-of relation supplied in the evidence packet: deserving is the present participle and gerund of deserve.

Two branches

值得別人給的好東西

天平最直接的兩種用法。差別在於另一邊放的是什麼:一邊放的是需要的幫助,一邊放的是掙來的獎賞。

值得幫助的

正式句型:be deserving of something

這一支不是新的畫面,而是把同一座天平攤開成一個正式的句子框架,而且明白地允許另一邊放懲罰。

adjective · C1

If a person or thing is deserving of something, they have earned it and should get it. This is a formal way of saying deserve, and what they get can be good or bad.
