You can picture an open hand rather than a closed one. Somebody has less than they need, and instead of holding tight to what is yours — money, food, time — you let some of it go across to them. 'Charitable' names that open-handed posture, and English then lets you hold your hand open in a second way: not with your money, but with your opinion of someone who has messed up.
