Here deserts does not mean sand, and it does not mean cake. It is an old noun for what you deserve — almost always the punishment or the unhappy result that fits what you did. You will nearly always meet it in the set phrase just deserts: “he got his just deserts” means he got the trouble that was coming to him. A little old and , but the phrase is still used. Though actually, long ago deserts could also mean a reward you had earned; in today’s English the phrase almost always has a sting. Spell it deserts (one s in the middle). Say it like desserts, with the strong beat at the end: de-SERTS. That is why so many people write it wrong.
