Think of two things with almost no gap between them — chairs pushed right up against each other, or one runner finishing a heartbeat after another. From that picture of 'almost no distance', the adverb spreads outward: watching something closely is standing near enough to see every detail, and two ideas that are closely linked sit so near each other that you can hardly separate them.
