Picture washing a pan and going right round it — the base, the sides, the handle, the bit underneath the rim — so that no part is left untouched. That covering of every part is the picture. Once English had a word for doing something all the way through, it also became a handy way of saying that a feeling or an opinion covers you all the way through: thoroughly enjoyed it, thoroughly confused.
