核心畫面

One way to hold remotely is as a gap you are reaching across. Something sits far off, and you touch it from where you are, without closing the distance. Sometimes the gap is real space: you are on a boat and the robot is on the sea floor. Sometimes the gap is likeness: the drink is a long way from tasting like lemon, and it only just reaches it. Either way the word keeps the distance in view, so whatever it touches, it touches only from far off.

From the word’s history

The packet's source entry gives remotely as remote plus -ly, so the word is simply the adjective remote turned into an adverb: in a far-off way.

來源資料只說 remotely 是 remote(遙遠的)加上 -ly。所以它字面上就是「用很遠的方式」。距離的畫面本來就在這個字裡面,後來才被拿去講程度。

Two branches

真的隔著距離:人不在現場

這一家是核心畫面的字面版本。距離是真的距離,公里數可以量。

From a long way away: doing something, or controlling something, without being in the same place as the person, machine, or work you are dealing with.

遠端地;從遠處

距離變成程度:只沾到一點邊

同一段距離被搬到程度上。不是人離得遠,是這件事離「真的算數」還很遠,只剛好碰到最外圈。

r · B2

By only a small amount: something is true, but only in a weak and thin way, so the taste, the likeness or the link is only just there.

略微;只有一點點
