One way to hold remotely is as a gap you are reaching across. Something sits far off, and you touch it from where you are, without closing the distance. Sometimes the gap is real space: you are on a boat and the robot is on the sea floor. Sometimes the gap is likeness: the drink is a long way from tasting like lemon, and it only just reaches it. Either way the word keeps the distance in view, so whatever it touches, it touches only from far off.
