A non-profit is an organization that takes in money but is not set up to make owners rich. Gifts, fees, or sales are supposed to go back into the work — a school, hospital, shelter, church, museum, or charity. People who work there can still be paid a salary; 'non-profit' does not mean 'nobody earns money.' It means leftover money is not taken home as profit for shareholders. Though actually, some non-profits are huge and run very much like companies, and the word is about legal purpose, not about whether the group feels kind. American English often nonprofit as one word. You will also see NPO (non-profit organization) and (non-governmental organization). They overlap, but stresses 'not the government,' while non-profit stresses 'not for owners' profit.'
