Start with something that took a hit and gave way: a zip that will not close, a pipe that split, a bone that cracked. That is bust plus -ed, and everything else is that same giving-way pointed somewhere new. A hidden plan can give way, and then you are busted. A wallet can give way, and then you are busted until payday. Even a game can give way, when one weapon is so strong the whole match stops being fair.

Busted is bust plus -ed, from the sense of bust that means to break or smash. The breaking is still visible in every use.
