An op is a medical operation: a doctor puts you to sleep, works on your body, and then you wake up. Friends, especially in Britain, cut the long word down and say, “I’m having an op next week,” the way they say exam instead of examination. It is home talk, not form talk. A hospital letter will still say operation; a text from your aunt will say op. In American English people more often say surgery. You will meet other ops that look the same and are not this word: in games, OP can mean “too strong,” and online it can mean “the person who started the post.” Those are different. This one is the hospital one. Though actually, even there it can sound a bit old-casual — younger American shows almost always say surgery.
