A joke inside a movie about how movies always have happy endings is 'meta.' 'Metadata' is data about data. Casually, people say something is 'so meta' when it feels self-aware in this way. Note: Meta (capital M) is also the name of a large tech company, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram — a separate, unrelated modern use.
