From Middle English biten, from Old English bītan 'bite', from Proto-Germanic *bītaną; cognate with German beißen.

源自古英文 bītan「咬」，和德文 beißen 同源。

Hold on to teeth closing on skin. That is one quick, sharp point of pain in one small place, and every use of biting keeps it. A creature that really does this is a biting insect. Wind on a bare face can feel the same, so the cold bites. A remark can land in the same small, sharp way, so words bite too. And in Kenyan English the noun goes back to the mouth: bitings are the little things you finish in one bite.
