Hold on to teeth closing on skin. That is one quick, sharp point of pain in one small place, and every use of biting keeps it. A creature that really does this is a biting insect. Wind on a bare face can feel the same, so the cold bites. A remark can land in the same small, sharp way, so words bite too. And in Kenyan English the noun goes back to the mouth: bitings are the little things you finish in one bite.
