Incisive describes a mind, a comment, a question, or a piece of writing that is sharp in a good way: it goes straight to what matters and does not wander. An incisive question is the one that makes everyone sit up. An incisive analysis cuts through the fog. It is a compliment, and it is fairly formal — you hear it in reviews, offices, and classrooms more than in playground talk. Long ago the word meant “cutting” in a physical sense, like a blade. That older meaning has mostly dropped away in everyday English; if you call a person incisive, you are not saying they walk around with a knife. You are saying their thinking has an edge. It is not the same as decisive (good at making a choice and sticking to it) and not the same as harsh. You can be kind and still incisive.
組成From Medieval Latin incisivus: incido (“to cut in, cut through”) + -ivus (“-ive”). In Late Middle English it meant “cutting, penetrating.” Later people used that “cutting through” idea for a clear, sharp mind. Compare French incisif.
