Picture an early morning when you step outside in a T-shirt and pull your arms in — not freezing, nothing dangerous, just cold enough that you wish you had brought a jacket. Chilly can be thought of as that small unwelcome cold, the kind that makes you want to close a window or hold a warm cup. Because the feeling is mild but unpleasant, English also lends it to people: a chilly welcome is not hostile, it simply has no warmth in it.
