Picture a ball struck from one side to the other and struck straight back — nobody keeps it, it just keeps travelling. That is the movement this word carries wherever it goes: two sides returning the same thing to each other, or one thing passed on and on around a room.
The verb comes from French bander, used of hitting the ball at tennis, with influence from words meaning to throw — so the tennis court really is inside the word.
