You can picture two hands crossing in mid-air: I let go of what I'm holding and it lands in your hand, while at the same moment what you were holding lands in mine. Nothing is just given away — for every thing that leaves, something comes back the other way. That two-way crossing, A goes out and B comes in to take its exact place, is the picture under every use of swap.
