    To spar means to practice fighting or boxing with a partner, using lighter, controlled punches - it's training, not a real fight. People also use it for a friendly verbal argument, going back and forth with words rather than fists ('the two politicians sparred over taxes'). On a ship, a spar is also the name for a strong pole that holds up the sails.
