You can think of quote as 'to point at someone else's exact words and repeat them as theirs, not yours'. You are not making the words up — you are pulling them out unchanged and saying 'these are their words, written/said just like this'. From repeating a saying, the same move stretches to repeating an exact number a source gives you — including the exact price a seller names.
