That act — weighing a thing on purpose in order to reach a verdict — is what every use of appraise is doing; only the scale and the answer change. Put money on the other side and the answer is a price. Put standards on the other side and the answer is a judgement: this plan works, this employee has done well, this risk is too high. Shrink the whole act down to a second and let it happen behind someone's eyes, and it becomes the long look a character gives a stranger before deciding anything out loud.

The packet's Wiktionary entry takes appraise from Middle English apreisen and Old French aprisier, to set a price on, from Late Latin appretiare, built on Latin pretium, price or value — the same root as precious, and a doublet of appreciate.
