From Latin inspicere (past participle inspectus) 'to look at, look into, examine', made of in- 'into' plus specere 'to look'; it enters English in the 1620s. The same specere sits inside spectator and inspector.
來自拉丁文 inspicere（過去分詞 inspectus），由 in-（往裡面）加上 specere（看）組成，字面就是「往裡面看、看進去」，1620 年代進入英文。同一個 specere 也藏在 spectator（觀看的人）、inspector（檢查員）裡。今天 inspect 給人的「不是掃一眼，是看進去」的感覺，跟這個組合是一致的。
