核心畫面

You can picture anodyne as the small bottle that takes the sting out. Something hurts; this is the thing you reach for, and afterwards the hurting is smaller. Nothing has been repaired — the pain has simply been . Once you hold that picture, every other use is the same move applied to something else: a worry , a sadness , and finally a sentence until there is nothing sharp left in it at all.

From the word’s history

From Medieval Latin anodynos, from Ancient Greek anodunos: an- 'without' plus odune 'pain' — literally 'without pain'. The adjective meaning 'noncontentious, bland' probably arrived through French anodin 'harmless, trivial'.

noun · C2

Something that comforts people and takes their mind off pain, worry or sadness, even though it changes nothing.

慰藉;讓人好過一點的事物

把話裡的稜角磨掉

最後一步:被磨鈍的不是痛,是話。一段話安全到刺不到任何人——也就等於裡面什麼都沒有。
