An analgesic is a drug that reduces pain. , ibuprofen, and stronger hospital medicines can all be analgesics. In ordinary talk, English speakers usually just say ; analgesic sounds more like a doctor or a packet . As an adjective it means “that reduces pain”: analgesic cream, an analgesic effect. Though actually not every medicine that makes you feel better is an analgesic: antibiotics fight , and an is a different job (stopping feeling, or making you sleep). Some analgesics are mild and you can buy them in a shop; some are strong and tightly controlled.
組成analgesia (“absence of pain”) + -ic (“of / for that”). Greek an- “without” + a root for the sense of pain (álgos “pain”). Compare the ending -algia.
