A consolation is something that makes a sad or disappointed feeling a little lighter. It may be kind words, a small prize, or a thought like “at least nobody was hurt.” After a loss, people talk about “cold consolation” when the comforting thing is true but does not really help much. A consolation prize is a small prize for someone who did not win — that use is everywhere, even among students who have never met the longer word on its own. Consolation is a little formal and a little soft; with friends people more often say “that made me feel better.”
