Describing something that gives you that , slightly worried feeling — the thing does the unsettling, and you are the one who feels it. An unsettling film, an unsettling silence, an unsettling smile, an unsettling thought. English speakers reach for this word when something is disturbing in a quiet way: nothing bad has actually happened, but you sense that something is not right. It is a favourite of film and book for exactly that reason — a horror movie is 'terrifying', but a strange, slow, beautiful film that leaves you uncomfortable is 'unsettling', and that is meant as praise. In daily life you would use it for news you did not expect, a stranger who stands too close, a doctor who pauses before answering. Compare it with its neighbours: scary means you feel danger; disturbing is stronger and darker, often about cruelty; worrying points at a specific problem; unsettling is the mild, unfocused one, the feeling of the ground moving slightly under you. It sounds educated but not stiff — perfectly natural in conversation.
