An antidote is a substance that stops or reverses the harm done by a poison. If someone is poisoned, doctors give them the right antidote to save their life. The word is also used more loosely, outside medicine, for anything that fixes or balances out a bad situation or feeling: 'laughter is the best antidote to stress' means laughing helps cancel out stress.
