Provocative describes something designed, or likely, to cause a strong reaction from people — anger, excitement, thought, or sometimes sexual interest. A provocative comment in a debate is meant to challenge people and make them react or think hard, often on purpose. A provocative outfit is one that draws a lot of attention, often because it is quite revealing. And a provocative question or piece of art is one that makes people think deeply, maybe even uncomfortably, about a topic — a stronger word than just 'interesting'.
