Picture the thing you reach for when something has gone wrong. Someone is ill, so you reach for a medicine; a machine or a plan has gone wrong, so you reach for a fix. A remedy is whatever you apply to a bad state to make it better — and the same word covers the bottle on the shelf and the measure a government takes.
