An acknowledgment is a way of showing or saying that you have noticed, accepted, or appreciated something. It can mean simply confirming you received something - 'they sent an acknowledgment of my email' - or it can mean accepting a fact, even one you don't like - 'his silence was an acknowledgment of guilt.' It's also the short thank-you section at the start of a book, called the 'acknowledgments,' where the author thanks the people who helped.
