You can picture accept as opening your hand and taking in what someone holds out to you, instead of pushing it away. Something is offered — a gift, a request, a hard truth, a person, an idea — and you let it in, you say yes to it. Every use is that same open-handed taking-in, just aimed at different kinds of things: a present, a payment, an applicant, a piece of bad news, an explanation, the blame.
