The supplied source derives it from Late Latin voluminosus, from volumen ('a roll'), from volvō ('to roll, turn about'). An ancient book was a rolled scroll: the more there was to say, the fatter the roll. That single word already held both bulk and quantity of writing, which is why English keeps them together here.
