When a house, a car, a bag or a room is roomy, it has a lot of space inside. You can stretch your legs, put a suitcase down, or walk around without bumping into things. Though actually, roomy is not the same as having many rooms: a one-room flat can be roomy if it is wide and not stuffed with furniture, and a large car can feel tight if the seats eat the space. People use it in ordinary talk, especially when they compare two houses or two cars. It is friendly and clear, not a fancy word. You would not call a person roomy.

組成room (the space inside a place) + -y (having that quality). So roomy is 'full of room'.
