- 1
Close-fitting clothes sit tight against the body and show its shape — a close-fitting shirt, dress, or pair of jeans. Close again means 'near': the cloth sits near the skin. It does not have to mean the clothes are painful or the wrong size, though a close-fitting thing can feel tight. Fashion and use it as a calm description; tight can sound more casual, or more like a complaint. The opposite idea is loose-fitting. In shops and on labels you will meet both.
