1. 1

If a room, space, or hole is cavernous, it is very large and deep, like a big cave. The word is about the feeling of empty volume: a high ceiling, a lot of air, often an echo, sometimes a little dark. People say a cavernous hall, a cavernous warehouse, a cavernous mouth. It does not have to be underground. It is a descriptive, slightly formal word, more at home in writing and careful speech than in quick chat. When it describes eyes or cheeks, it usually means deep-set or hollow-looking, not literally a cave.
