One way to picture this word: in your mind you put a 'this is true' stamp on something — on a fact, on a claim, on what a person just told you. To believe is to accept it inside as real. From that single act everything radiates: stamp it firmly and you 'are sure'; stamp it and you merely 'think / suppose'; stamp the whole of a religion and you 'have faith'; and when something is so strange you can't get the stamp to stick, you 'can't believe it'.
