One way to hold squashed: a heavy hand pressing down from outside. Whatever is under that hand does not break into pieces and does not disappear. It just goes flat, loses its own shape, and has nowhere left to go. Everything squashed says grows out of that one downward press — a tomato, a passenger, or a piece of news.
