From jam + -ed; jam, first attested in the early 18th century, is perhaps from Middle English chammen 'to bite upon', probably imitative.

Think of something forced into a space that is already full. It is held on every side at once, and there is nothing left to move into. Pull on it and it does not give. That one squeezed-tight picture can sit on a single window in its frame, on a whole street of cars, on bodies in a narrow corridor, or even on the air that a radio signal is trying to cross.

jammed 可以想成這樣一個畫面：一個東西被硬塞進一個已經滿了的空間，四面同時被夾住，連一點能動的縫都不剩。你去拉它，它完全不讓。這個「擠到死」的畫面，可以套在一扇卡在框裡的窗戶上，也可以套在整條塞滿車的路上、走廊裡貼著彼此的人群，甚至是無線電訊號要穿過去的那段空中。換的只是被塞滿的是什麼，感覺是同一個。
