Picture the empty room around you — the part of a place that has nothing in it, so there is air to move through and room to put things. That emptiness is the root. Stretch it bigger and it becomes the vast emptiness above the Earth (outer space) and the whole extent in which everything exists; shrink it and it becomes the gap between two things, the blank on a page or form; and lift it from the physical into the personal, and it becomes elbow room and freedom — or even a span of time.
