    How much empty room is left between things that come one after another — most often between the letters, words and lines of printed text. 'Double spacing' means an empty line's worth of room between each line, which is what a teacher asks for so there is room to write corrections. 'Line spacing' is the setting in your word processor. But the word is not only about text: talk about the spacing of plants in a row, builders about the spacing of screws or posts, a doctor about the spacing of doses through the day. So think of it as a general word for the gaps in a repeating arrangement — the gap itself, and also the act of choosing those gaps. It is uncountable in normal use: you say 'the spacing is too tight', not 'the spacings are'.
