核心畫面

You can picture the blank strip running around the edge of a page, outside the block of writing — the border of empty space where the text stops and the paper's edge begins.

可以想成一張紙上,文字區塊外圍那一圈留白:字排到這裡就停了,剩下到紙邊之間那條空白的邊帶,就是 margin。

From the word’s history

Margin comes from Latin margo (marginem) 'edge, brink, border.' The oldest sense is simply a border or edge — the page-edge picture — and the other meanings all grow from that idea of the edge, or of the extra strip sitting at the edge.

margin 來自拉丁文 margo(marginem)「邊、緣、邊界」。最早的意思就是「邊界、邊緣」——也就是頁邊那個畫面;其他義項全都從「邊緣」,或「邊緣多出來那條帶子」這個概念長出來。

Three branches

邊緣(實體與地位)

最貼近字根的一支:margin 當「邊」本身用——紙的邊、土地水域的邊,乃至比喻上「處在邊邊、沒什麼份量」的位置。

page margin · noun · C2

The empty space along the edge of a page, next to the writing.

頁邊空白

差距(兩量之間的差)

從「邊」轉到「兩條邊之間的距離」:一邊贏、一邊輸,中間那段差就是 margin;買價與賣價之間那段差也是。

winning margin · noun · C2

The amount by which one side wins or loses a game, vote, or election.

差距

餘裕·容錯

把「邊上多出來那條帶子」想成刻意留的緩衝:需要的量之外,額外留的一段時間、金錢、空間,讓事情就算有偏差也還撐得住。

safety buffer · noun · C2

An extra amount of time, money, or space that you add to make sure something works out.
