From the word’s history

Built from in- 'not' + depend, and depend is Latin de- 'from' + pendere 'to hang'. So independence is literally 'the state of not hanging from' anyone — the leaning support removed, standing on your own.

由 in-（不）加上 depend 組成，而 depend 來自拉丁文 de-（從）+ pendere（懸掛）。所以 independence 字面上就是『不從別人身上垂掛下來』——把倚靠的支撐拿掉，自己站著的那個狀態。
