From Middle French confident, from Latin confidens, present participle of confidere 'to trust fully'.
源自中古法文 confident，來自拉丁文 confidere「完全信任」。
Picture someone standing steady before the result is in: they do not know for certain, but the doubt has gone quiet. That settled feeling can point at three things — how this will turn out, what I can do, or whether this is so — and English uses the same word for all three.
可以想成：結果還沒出來，但一個人已經站得很穩——他不是真的知道，只是心裡的懷疑安靜下來了。這份篤定可以指向三個方向：事情會怎麼發展、我做不做得到、這件事是不是真的；英文三個都用同一個字，差別只在後面接什麼。
