When we call an animal, a plant, an area of land, or a building protected, we mean the law has put a shield around it: it is illegal to harm or damage it. You must not hunt a protected animal, pick a protected plant, build over a protected forest, or knock down a protected house without permission. The word is the -ed form of protect, but here it works like a label you see on signs and in news about nature and old buildings. Though actually, protected has a wider everyday life too: a password-protected file, a protected childhood. Those still mean kept safe from harm, but this sense is the legal one — not merely lucky or well looked after, but forbidden to hurt.
protected 用來形容動物、植物、土地或建築被法律保護起來，傷害或破壞它們是違法的。例如不能獵捕受保護的動物、不能採摘受保護的植物、不能在受保護的森林上蓋東西，或沒有許可就拆掉受保護的房子。這個字是 protect 的 -ed 形式，但在這裡的功能比較像標籤，常見於自然保育和古蹟的告示與新聞。
