核心畫面

One way to picture rivet: a short metal pin pushed through a hole in two pieces of metal, and then flat on the far side. Now it is wider than the hole at both ends. The two pieces are locked, and nothing is going to move again. Everything else the word does is that same picture used somewhere else — on a joint, on your eyes, on your feet.

The source entry traces rivet to Old French rivet, from the verb river 'to fetter (a person)', from rive 'rim, edge', ultimately from Latin ripa 'riverbank'. The old idea of fastening something down at the edge sits close to the modern picture.
