If something is riveting, it is so interesting or that you cannot stop watching it or listening to it. A film, a book, a talk, or a match can all be riveting. It is a strong compliment — stronger than 'quite interesting' — and people use it in speech and in writing. Though actually the picture behind it is a rivet: a small metal pin that holds two pieces of metal together so they cannot move. A riveting story holds your mind in that same tight way. You also hear 'I was riveted' (I could not look away). You usually say it about a thing you watch or hear, not about a quiet person sitting still.
