rhubarb
One way to hold this branch: a plant that arrived from far away. Above the ground, broad leaves and thick red stems; under the ground, a short brown-yellow root. The stems are sour and are cooked with sugar. The root is bitter and is dried for medicine. One plant, two parts, two uses.

From the word’s history
The name probably comes from Greek rhêon barbarikón, the rhubarb of foreign lands, because the plant reached Europe from far away along the trade routes.

One way to hold this branch: actors at the back of a stage, each the same word over and over — rhubarb, rhubarb, rhubarb. No hard , no clear vowel, so the voices blur into one another. Everything here grows out of that: sound you can hear but cannot make out.

From the word’s history
This branch is traced to the London stage around 1852, where Charles Kean's company had actors repeat the word to imitate indistinct conversation; the word was chosen because it has no harsh consonants and no clear vowels.
