    A purgative is a substance, usually a medicine, that makes your bowels empty — it makes you go to the toilet, often quite strongly. Doctors and older books like this word; in everyday talk people are more likely to say laxative. You can also use it as an adjective: a purgative medicine is one that has that emptying effect. Some old purgatives were harsh (castor oil is the classic story). Today the word feels medical and a little old-fashioned, not like something you would say at the dinner table. Stick to the bowel-medicine meaning first. The verb purge (to clean out, or, in , to force people out) sits nearby, but a purgative in ordinary English is still the thing you swallow.
