A commotion is a sudden burst of noisy activity: people shouting, running, chairs, asking what happened. You usually hear it before you understand it. A dog knocking a stand in a market can start one; so can news that makes a whole room jump up. We often say “What’s all the commotion?” when we want the fuss explained. It does not have to be a fight or a riot — though it can grow into one. It is the stir itself, the noisy moving-around. The word is a little story-like and a little old-fashioned, but families still use it when a quiet place suddenly is not quiet.
