summary · noun · B2
A short account that gives only the main points of something longer.
摘要;概要
Picture something that was running, stopped for a while, and now picks up from where it left off — not started over, continued. That is the verb. The noun is a different word wearing the same spelling: résumé, borrowed from French much later, meaning a — and in modern American usage, the one-page of your career. The two are not pronounced alike.
The verb (c.1400) is from Old French resumer and Latin resumere "take up again" (re- + sumere "to take"). The noun résumé (1804) is the French noun use of the past participle of resumer "to sum up" — the same Latin root, but borrowed roughly 400 years later as a distinct form; the "career summary" sense dates from the 1940s.
動詞(約 1400 年)來自古法文 resumer 和拉丁文 resumere「重新拿起」(re-「再」+ sumere「拿」)。名詞 résumé(1804 年)則是法文把 resumer「摘要」的過去分詞當名詞用——字根同源,但晚了大約四百年才以另一個形式借進英文,而「履歷」這個意思要到 1940 年代才出現。所以它們不是巧合同形,而是同一個字根長出的兩批枝葉。
