You can picture leave as the moment of separation: you and a place (or a person, or a thing) were together, and now you pull apart. Sometimes you are the one moving away (you leave the room); sometimes you stay put and let the other thing stay behind (you leave your keys on the table). Either way, after the one side is here and the other is over there.

This noun leave is really a different word from the verb 'to leave', even though they look the same. You can picture it as a permission slip: someone in charge says 'yes, you're allowed'. From that one idea of granted permission grow two branches — official permission to do something, and permission to be away from work for a stretch of time (a holiday, sick leave, maternity leave).
